چکیده

A direct link between a Vlasov equation and the equations of motion of a rotating fluid with an effective pressure depending only on a pseudo-density is illustrated. In this direct link, the resulting fluid equations necessarily appear in flux conservative form when there are no topographical and rotational terms. In contrast, multilayer isopycnic and isentropic equations used in atmosphere and ocean dynamics, in the absence of topographical and rotational terms, can not be brought in a conservative flux form, and, hence, can not be derived directly from the Vlasov equations. Another route is explored, therefore, by deriving the Hamiltonian formulation of the two-layer isopycnic and isentropic equations as a restriction from a Hamiltonian formulation of two decoupled Vlasov equations. The work is motivated by our search for energy-preserving or even Hamiltonian (kinetic) numerical schemes. Author

A parcel formulation for Hamiltonian layer models

Starting from the three-dimensional hydrostatic primitive equations, we derive Hamiltonian N–layer models with isentropic tropospheric and isentropic or isothermal stratospheric layers. Our construction employs a new parcel Hamiltonian formulation which describes the fluid as a continuum of Hamiltonian ordinary differential equations bound together by integral transport laws. In particular, we ...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...

Pressure Calculation in the Flow Between Two Rotating Eccentric Cylinders at High Renolds Numbers

This paper reports the result of an analytical investigation of a steady, incompressible and viscous flow between two eccentric, rotating cylinders at high Reynolds number. A one dimensional case is far from reality because the gap between the cylinders is very small. Further, when their axes are displaced by a small distance, usually caused by bearing loads, two dimensional effects become obvi...

Stress Analysis of Rotating Thick Truncated Conical Shells with Variable Thickness under Mechanical and Thermal Loads

In this paper, thermo-elastic analysis of a rotating thick truncated conical shell subjected to the temperature gradient, internal pressure and external pressure is presented. Given the existence of shear stress in the conical shell due to thickness change along the axial direction, the governing equations are obtained based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). These equations are so...
